Homework - Speeches

Prepared Speeches

Your task: to prepare a speech on a topic of your choice to be presented to the class mid wk3.

You need to think about your speech topic options, draft write your speech, edit (organise) and finalise your writings.  Be sure to include an introduction or conclusion.

“Hi, my name is Bobby and I’m going to talk to you about…”  NO!! – as PhDs you’re required to be a lot more creative than this.

You will be given time and guidance in class to write your speech.
You need to have your topic decided upon.
Be sure you have your resources at school.

No props or costumes required.

Aim for 3 minutes.  A bell will sound at 2.30min and you’ll be stopped at 4mins

Step One

Decide what you’re going to talk about.

What are you best at talking about?
Is it audience appropriate?

Don’t make your topic too big.

Decide on the purpose.  What do you want your speech to achieve?
·         Entertaining
·         Informative
·         Persuasive
·         Futuristic or Imaginative

Brainstorm ideas – include every possibility!!!

Step Two

Research your topic.

Use your own experiences.  These are the easiest to talk about.

Use films, videos, T.V, radio.

Use the library, internet.

Use the experiences of other people.

Step Three

Organise your ideas.

Wake up your audience with an interesting introduction linked to the purpose of your speech.
The BIG HOOK

Check that you have a logical interesting and convincing body to your speech.

The purpose of your speech will be a good conclusion.

Step Four

Make yourself some cue cards.

Cut out some small cards which will fit into the palm of your hand.

Some people write down their whole speech using one card for each topic and highlight the key ideas.

Other find key words are sufficient.

Step Five

Practise
Practise
Practise

The more you practise the more you will get to know your speech.

Practise
·         Using body language
·         Speaking out
·         Speaking clearly
·         Using your voice effectively!!!!!!
·         Standing straight
·         Glancing at your cue cards – not reading them
·         Effective and consistent eye contact

·       Ask members of your family to evaluate your speech using the assessment criteria.
