PhD Homework - Ongoing…

RESEARCH DEBATES     RESEARCH DEBATES     RESEARCH DEBATES

By now you would have all participated in and seen a number of debates.

 Is it easy??  No.

Can you wing it??  No.

Do you need to know your stuff??  Yes.

Are you prepared??  No.

Remember that this is the final work for this topic.  No posters, no power points, no game shows, no interviews – just you and your team arguing your side of your topic.

In a debate you are delivering your argument in a speech.  As with speeches in English you have to be prepared, knowledgeable, and able to deliver your speech confidently (aim for 1 – 2 mins).  This is no different.  You also need to quote your sources.

My team’s position

Mock debates reflection

·         Hard to read rebuttal notes written by others
      ·         Voices too quiet
      ·         Some people confident but mostly not confident
      ·         Unprepared
      ·         Reading word for word
      ·         Not expanding ideas
      ·         Speaking for 10 seconds only
