Reminders - Zoo Trip

PhD Zoo Encounter - Friday

Reminders.

 Clothing – as we know the weather can be sunny, windy and rainy all at the same time.  Please ensure your child has something warm and waterproof to wear and a hat.  School uniform shoes must be worn.

 Fuel – a fully packed lunch and drink bottle is required.  The café is not an option.

First Aid – teachers will have a first aid kit.

Cameras – bring at your own risk.  Please NO cameras that are telephones.

Pencil cases, clipboard (or such) - in school bag, as shown in class a clipboard can be a peg and stiff cardboard or book.

Please be at school promptly for roll call and boarding the bus.

Go to the Auckland Zoo’s homepage -  http://www.aucklandzoo.co.nz  
Take some time to explore this website.
Click on “Exploring The Zoo” (top right hand side).  Next click on “Enrichment” (second one down). 

Tasks:

·         Read the zoo’s definition of what enrichment is.  Now write the definition in your own words.
·         Read the text and watch several videos about what Auckland Zookeepers are doing to enrich the  lives of their animal population (link is at bottom of enrichment page).
·         Now write your reaction to these attempts.
                           o   What are the zookeepers doing well to benefit the animals? (3 minimum)
                           o   What are some suggestions you have? (3 minimum)
·         Next view the enrichment section discussing domestic pets (link at bottom of enrichment page).
           o   Have you done any of them? Which?
                           o   Which would you like to do? Why? (3 minimum)

Extra for Experts:

o   Choose an animal then design and label an enclosure for them.  Think carefully about the environment you create (materials, public viewing, size, other species, numbers, protection etc).  Also be thinking about what enrichments you provide your animal.

You could always check out other zoo's webpages from around the world - Singapore, London, Sydney, San Diego, Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo.

Practice your spelling list for the next test which is going to be in week 8.  A big congratulations to all those who have passed all three spelling test so far this year.

                Continue practicing your basic fact, and good job to those got a LPB  or passed on    Tuesday.

Todd and Austin visit the PhDs



Todd and Austin

On Wednesday the PhDs welcomed Todd and Austin to our school.  Todd's a dog control officer with the Auckland City Council and Austin is his trusty partner.  Todd shared about his job and experiences and fielded a barrage of questions from the floor.

The purpose of the visit was to provide information and stimulate discussion for our term question.  Some great questions were asked - way to go guys!!!  One thing for sure - Austin is 100% cute and was such a well behaved fella.
